Why Kendwa?

Deep water, soft sand and a front-row seat for the sunset

Most of Zanzibar’s beaches empty out twice a day as the tide drains the lagoon. Kendwa, on the north-west coast, is the exception: the sand shelves away fast enough that there is always water to swim in. It also faces due west, so every evening ends with the sun going down over the sea.

Three kilometres from the village bustle of Nungwi, Kendwa is calmer and more spacious — until the Saturday nearest the full moon, when Kendwa Rocks throws the biggest beach party on the island. From the sand you can be snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll or Tumbatu within the hour, and Stone Town, the spice farms and Jozani’s red colobus monkeys are all an easy day trip.

Where to go

The beach, the reefs and the island behind them

Kendwa is the place to do nothing at all. These are the places that make the days in between worth getting off the sunbed for.

The long white beach and calm turquoise water of Kendwa on the north-west coast of Zanzibar Kendwa & the north coast

Kendwa Beach

Zanzibar’s all-tide swimming beach

A broad, west-facing sweep of pale sand on the north-west coast of Unguja where the seabed drops away quickly enough that the water stays deep at low tide. That, the sunsets and the monthly Full Moon Party are why people choose Kendwa over anywhere else on the island.

Snorkellers in the water beside a boat off the north coast of Zanzibar Reefs, islands & lagoons

Mnemba Atoll

The island’s best reef, about an hour by boat

A protected ring of coral around a tiny private island off the north-east coast. Boats from Kendwa round the tip of Zanzibar to reach clear water, dense fish life and, on many mornings, pods of dolphins.

A deserted white-sand beach backed by palms on Tumbatu Island Reefs, islands & lagoons

Tumbatu Island

The quiet island on Kendwa’s horizon

The long, low island that lies off the coast opposite Kendwa. Its people keep largely to themselves, its reefs are lightly visited, and a short boat ride gets you snorkelling without the crowds of Mnemba.

White sand and pale turquoise shallows at Nungwi, northern Zanzibar Kendwa & the north coast

Nungwi

The lively village next door

Three kilometres up the coast, at the very tip of the island, Nungwi is Kendwa’s busier neighbour: a fishing and boatbuilding village with the north’s widest choice of restaurants, bars and dive centres, a lighthouse and a turtle lagoon.

An Aldabra giant tortoise on Changuu (Prison Island), Zanzibar Reefs, islands & lagoons

Prison Island

Giant tortoises off Stone Town

Changuu, a small island about half an hour by boat from Stone Town, where a 19th-century prison that never held prisoners now shares the ground with a colony of Aldabra giant tortoises, some of them more than a century old.

Good to know

Kendwa in brief: your questions answered

Frequently asked questions

Why is Kendwa famous?

For three things: it is the Zanzibar beach least affected by the tide, so you can swim all day; it faces west, so the sunsets are superb; and it hosts the monthly Full Moon Party at Kendwa Rocks.

How do I get to Kendwa from the airport?

By road — roughly 55–60 km and 1 to 1.5 hours. A pre-booked private transfer is easiest; taxis and (for the patient) dala-dala minibuses are the alternatives. Details in our airport to Kendwa guide.

Which tours should I book from Kendwa?

A morning snorkelling trip to Mnemba Atoll, a sunset dhow cruise and one day inland for Stone Town and a spice farm cover the essentials. See the ranked list.

When is the Full Moon Party?

Normally on the Saturday closest to each full moon. Dates occasionally shift, so confirm with Kendwa Rocks before you plan a trip around it.

Is Kendwa quiet or a party beach?

Quiet for about 27 nights a month — noticeably calmer than Nungwi. The exception is the full-moon weekend, when the middle of the beach is loud until the early hours.

What paperwork do I need for Zanzibar?

A Tanzanian visa (most travellers can get an e-visa in advance) and Zanzibar’s compulsory inbound travel insurance, bought online before arrival. The rules change, so check the travel guide and official sources before flying.
