Mnemba is a small private island a few kilometres off Zanzibar’s north-east coast, surrounded by an oval reef several kilometres across. The island itself belongs to an exclusive lodge and is off-limits to day visitors, but the reef around it is a marine conservation area and the best-known snorkelling and diving site in Zanzibar: clear water, healthy coral in places and big shoals of reef fish.
From Kendwa you reach it by sea. Boats head north, round the tip of the island at Nungwi and run down the east side — typically 45 minutes to an hour and a quarter depending on the boat and the swell. Bottlenose and spinner dolphins live in these waters and are seen on many trips, though never on demand.
Top things to do at Mnemba Atoll
Snorkel the reef
Most boats anchor on the sheltered side of the atoll in a few metres of water. Expect parrotfish, angelfish, moorish idols, trumpetfish and, with luck, a turtle or an octopus. The trip that leaves from Kendwa beach saves you the road transfer to the east coast.
Look for dolphins — responsibly
Seeing a pod alongside the boat is a thrill. Boats crowding or chasing the animals so that guests can jump in on top of them is not, and it is a real problem here. Choose an operator that keeps its distance and do not pressure the skipper to get closer.
Dive the walls and bommies
Dive centres in Kendwa and Nungwi run two-tank trips to sites around Mnemba, suitable for both newly certified and experienced divers. Green turtles are a regular sight.

How to get to Mnemba Atoll
- By boat from Kendwa: the direct option. Trips leave from the beach in the morning and take about an hour each way.
- By road and boat: cheaper tours drive you across to Matemwe or Muyuni on the north-east coast (roughly 45 minutes) for a much shorter boat ride. Better if you are prone to seasickness.
Insider tips
- Go early. The sea is calmest and the reef least crowded first thing in the morning; by late morning dozens of boats may be on the moorings.
- Book for the start of your stay so there is time to reschedule if the weather cancels the trip.
- A conservation fee is charged per visitor. Some tours include it, some collect it in cash on the day — check before you book.
- Wear a rash vest rather than relying on sunscreen, and never stand on or touch the coral.
